Super Mario All-Stars Review

Four Mario games in one. How can you go wrong?

09/04/2001

Background/Story
Does the background of Mario need explaining? Well, Mario the hero (and notorious plumber extraordinaire), and Luigi, his faithful partner, always try to rid the world of evil while saving the princess. Now, four classic games have been crammed into one game pak for the SNES. These games are, Mario Bros., Mario Bros. 2, Mario Bros. 3, and (the previously unreleased in America game called) The Lost Levels.

Game Statistics

  • Four Mario games in one! (Including the new Lost Levels)
  • 16-megabit cartridge.
  • Four save positions for each game!

Game Design
None of the original game design has changed. Except now you can save your progress in all of the games. The Lost Levels game is the same design as the original Super Mario Bros. All the games are platform based. All the games were well designed for their era. Mario 2 has an interesting story behind it. It was originally not a Mario game, and Nintendo bought the writes to it, changed the sprites and released it in America. In Japan Mario 2, was lost levels. Also, in the All-Stars/Super Mario World compilation, the Luigi sprites were changed to make him look thinner and more "Luigi-like".

Graphics
While none of the original game design has changed, some of the graphics have been upgraded. Also a snazzy intro has been included. These graphics are still top of the line for SNES games too; even the old ones with their slight upgrades match all the current SNES games (except for Donky Kong Country, which blew everyone away!). The graphics are totally cool, and the backgrounds have been improved greatly.

Sound
All the classic Mario themes and sound effects are back. If you enjoyed them before you will still love them! I think the sound is 100% awesome! No room for improvement here, well done Nintendo!

Control
The control handles differently for all the games (except Mario 1, and Lost Levels, which are the same). The menus are simple but can be very frustrating because sometimes they bring you back to the intro and force you to watch it again before continuing. This has and still does continually piss me off, and may very well be the only real flaw to this game.

Satisfaction
Four Mario games. Enough said.

Replay Value/Game Length
FOUR GAMES (sometimes five). Plus these are classic games...these are the trademarks of Nintendo. Nintendo would have crumbled long ago if it were not for the lovable Mario. This pak has four games, call me in a few months when you're done them all.

Overall
Now I can save my Mario games! What else is there to say, the best compilation cartridge ever. If you want to experience classic Nintendo games without buying the old NES, buy this game. Also, with a friend, you can enjoy playing the Mario 3 battle mode, or alternating turns for the other games.
