GameShark Pro for GameBoy Review

RPG hacking is where it's at.

Introduction
Ever since I had Pokémon, I had GameShark. In essence, GameShark allows you to input codes to modify the video game's programming, usually to enhance (or make easier) the gameplay. You can either hack your own codes or find them on the Internet. I find GameShark particularly useful for Pokémon games, as you can do almost anything you want. I was very fond of this GameShark while avoiding making my games overly easy.

Statistics

  • Video game enhancing.
  • Hundreds of stored codes for old games.
  • Hacking options.
  • Code Storage.

Design
The device is roughly the same size as a GameBoy cartridge with a port for plugging the games into. Once you plug the device into the GameBoy cartridge slot, and then plug a game into the GameShark cartridge slot. When you turn on the system, you enter the GameShark menu where you can either input codes, view archived codes, save codes, hack codes or delete codes. All you have to do is either input codes or access saved ones. Once you have entered all the desired codes, you enter the game. Using a switch on the top of the device you can either turn the codes on or off during play. Examples of codes are, infinite ammo, infinite lives, and invincibility. One thing I did not like was the fact that save codes go into the archived list and to access these codes sometimes you have to scroll down through a lot of games before you find the game you are looking for. Overall, the design is very good.

Value
I picked up my GameShark Pro for about $40 CND. This is about the price of a GameBoy game, which is a lot of money. However, you use this game to get more replay value out of your old games which almost adds up to the same play time you would have if you bought a new game. I think my GameShark was worth it, but it is all a matter of opinion.

Satisfaction
I still use my GameShark to breed very powerful Pokémon. Using my GameShark, I have found ways to fight any wild Pokémon of my choice (including Mew and Celebi), make any Pokémon learn any attack (No more finding TMs) and getting any items I want (protein any one?). The ability to control what Pokémon I have and what attacks they will have allowed me to skillfully obtain a Surfing Pikachu in Pokémon Special Pikachu Edition. This alone was very satisfying because at that time it was unknown exactly what a Surfing Pikachu was. Through trial and error I finally produced a Surfing Pikachu which opened a surfing mini-game. This would not have been possible without my GameShark, so I was very pleased. Of course not everyone's GameShark experience will be this fulfilling, but I was supremely satisfied with this product.

Overall
I would recommend this for people who play any sort of RPG where they can obtain items that they could not get without its use. Other than that, GameShark can be fun to give you infinite lives and things, but that fun won't last long. RPG hacking is where it's at.
