Background/Story
The peaceful Mushroom Kingdom has been invaded by the Koopas; a tribe of turtles that use black magic. The people of the Mushroom Kingdom have been turned into stones, bricks and even field horsehair plants! The Mushroom Kingdom has fallen into ruin! The only one that can undo the black magic of the Koopas is Princess Toadstool, daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is has been captured by the Koopa King, Bowser. Mario, a plumber, hears about the Mushroom people's plight and sets out on a quest to rescue Princess Toadstool, restore order to the Mushroom Kingdom and defeat the evil Bowser.
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a remake of the 1985 original. Lost Levels, which was Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, has also been included in the game. Not only is this cartridge two games in one, it also includes many other features. These include: A calendar, a fortune teller, 8 single or multi-player racing levels, a record album, a high score list, and several printer options for banners and comics. Also included is an extensive Challenge mode, where you play the original game, one level at a time. As you go through the level you have three goals. One is to find the 5 red coins that are hidden, another goal is to find the hidden Yoshi egg, and the last is to reach a certain score in points. By doing so, you can earn a Coin badge, a Yoshi egg badge, and a Blue Leaf badge respectively. As you complete levels through the game, all these different modes and options are unlocked.

Game Design
The design of the game is basically the same as the original game. Between the levels there is an overhead map showing the connection of the levels. Unfortunately, you can't move between levels in this overhead mode; it is just a visual representation of where you are. Since there are not enough pixels in the GameBoy resolution, you are able to look up and down, and forward and back. This way you can see all that you normally would be able to if you were playing the original game on a TV. The Challenge mode allows you to play any one of the original 32 levels. When you complete the Level, Mario or Luigi comes into an end screen and Toad is there; Toad tells you how many red coins you collected, if you got the Yoshi egg, and how many points you collected in the game. The multiplayer mode is very cool. It allows two cartridge holders to race, head-to-head, for the flagpole. Throughout the level there are switch blocks, when the switch blocks are red, wall appear in your way to block your path, and when the switch blocks are white, the walls are just outlines. The trick is, when the switch blocks are white for you, they are red for your opponent. Check out the Ndex strategy for maps of these levels. Overall, the game has been effectively transferred to the GameBoy.
Graphics
While the graphics are basically the same as the original, the colours have been updated. This makes the game more appealing to look at. Also nice is the overhead map design, which will show what type of level you will be playing: normal, underwater, underground, in the air, or a castle. The menus and extra options also have very good graphics, and sprites and banners can be found and printed in the special printer mode.
Sound
Many classic themes are back as well as some new ones. There are upgraded sound effects which really enhance the gameplay. The sound is a very cool part about this game and has been well adapted to be on the GameBoy Color system.
Control
The control handles exactly the same way as the original. This takes some getting used to, but a true Mario player will quickly adapt. So the controls are simply A to jump, and B to run when you are using the D-pad to move. The menus are easy to navigate using A as forward and B as back. The controls for this game are very effective.
Satisfaction
This game was very satisfying. Playing these classic levels on a handheld is extremely fun. Since the game is quite challenging, you are left very satisfied when you defeat a difficult part. The multiplayer mode was also very fun, and probably one of the best multiplayer games for the GameBoy. This is definitely one of my favourite GameBoy colour games.
Replay Value/Game Length
This game is very, very long. There are so many modes to unlock. There are also tons of badges to earn. The challenge mode is quite difficult and will take a long time to complete. It is next to impossible to complete everything in the game. I still play this game from time to time, trying to find some Yoshi coins, or improving my scores. If you can find someone else with this game, the multiplayer mode is extremely fun. My friend Player Guy Forever and myself, are the best in the world at this multiplayer mode. If you think you are better you are wrong, we can beat you. Now that that is cleared up, I will tell you that this game is what you need if you are taking a long series of car rides.
Overall
This is a very good remake of a classic. It includes so many extra features, and an excellent multiplayer game. This game is not only two Mario games, but it is also a pocket organizer thanks to its calendar mode. With so many options, this game is one of the best Mario ports on the market.
