Space World Wrap-Up

Space World 2001 has come and gone. The Nintendo Index has highlighted some of the GameCube and Game Boy Advance announcements that were made.

New Games

Nintendo Officially announced that both a Mario and Zelda game were in development for the GameCube. A brief video clip was shown of both those games.

From the Mario video little could be determined about the game. The video clip contained Mario running and jumping around an ocean-side town. The town itself was quite large; much larger than anything that appeared in Super Mario 64. Mario himself was wearing some type of machine on his back. However, it is not apparent as to what it does. During the video clip Mario appeared to be running much faster than he did in Super Mario 64. Mario Sunshine (tentative title) will be released in summer 2002 in Japan. No North America release dates have been announced.

The Zelda video clip was very shocking. The Zelda game had cartoon style graphics that contrasted the Zelda technical demo that appeared during Spaceworld 2000. While I do not believe this graphical style is better than the realistic style that was shown during Spaceworld 2000, the character animation is as good (or better) than most animated motion pictures. The GameCube Zelda game will be released in late 2002 in Japan. No North America release dates have been announced.

GameCube delayed

The release of the Nintendo game cube will be pushed back by two-weeks so that Nintendo can cope with increased demands. The two-week delay allows Nintendo to have 200,000 extra systems at launch. The Nintendo will ship 700,000 GameCubes at launch and 1.1 million GameCubes by the end of the year.

GameCube software shuffle

Nintendo has changed the North America release dates for their first-generation GameCube games:

  • Luigi's Mansion - November 18th (launch)
  • Wave Race: Blue Storm - November 18th (launch)
  • Pikmin - November 19th
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee - December 3rd
  • Eternal Darkness - December 3rd
  • NBA Courtside 2002 - January 2002
  • Star Fox: Dinosaur Planet - First quarter 2002.

Metroid Prime

A brief video clip of Metroid prime was showcased at the show. It showed some of the first-person shooter modes. This game looks quite nice.

Star Fox: Dinosaur Planet

It was revealed at the show that Rare's action adventure game will contain space ship shooting levels just like other Star Fox games.

GameCube launch colours revealed

In North America, the GameCube will launch in two colours, black and indigo. Controllers will come in four colours. Black, indigo, orange and a half-and-half colour where one side of the controller is indigo and the other side is clear.

Nintendo Announces GameCube controller and memory card prices.

The GameCube controller will retail for $34.95 US. Memory cards will cost $14.95 US.

Nintendo shows Game Boy Advance and GameCube contectivity

During Spaceworld, Nintendo unveiled a couple of projects that will utilize the Game Boy Advance/GameCube connectivity.

One game was a version of Kirby's Tilt 'N' Tumble for the GameCube. The GameCube game used a blank Game Boy Advance cartridge that contained the same type of motion sensor that was used in Kirby's Tilt 'N' Tumble for the Game Boy Colour. The GameCube would send program information directly to the Game Boy Advance. Essentially, the Game Boy Advance would act as a controller.

The second game that was displayed was a Game Boy Advance version of Animal Forest. It was used to unlock special "extras" in the GameCube version.

Super Mario Advance 2

Super Mario Advance 2 is a port of the SNES game Super Mario World. No new graphical or audio improvements have been made. The game also includes the exact same multi-player mode that was in Super Mario Advance.
