The third game in the Metroid series, Super Metroid builds upon an already established game mechanics of the two previous titles, Metroid for the NES and Metroid II: The Return of Samus for the Game Boy. The story follows right where Metroid II left off.
After eradicating all of the Metroids on SR388, one little young Metroid hatchling came across Samus. Samus took the Metroid to the Ceres research station where scientists could examine it. Shortly after, the research station was ambushed Space Pirates and the last remaining Metroid was taken to Zebes.

Super Metroid took the Metroid franchise in a new direction. Formerly Metroid games were considered medium-scale action games with some puzzle elements. Super Metroid is a large-scale action game with a great deal of puzzle elements. The SNES control system allowed Super Metroid to become a far deeper adventure than the previous two titles. This game has more weapons, items, abilities and secrets than the previous games which really add depth to the game. The map system is the best addition in the game. Pressing start reveals a map that indicates the layout of specific regions. It allows for people to backtrack between areas, which is essential for a non-linear game like Metroid.
Super Metroid is also a technically astounding game. It boasts impressive graphics and great art direction. There are tons of audio samples from everything to Samus' weapons to enemy "grunts." The atmospheric music in the game is catchy and really sets the mood.
Metroid and Metroid II were great games. What Nintendo did with Super Metroid was take great aspects from those games and then pump them up tenfold. Super Metroid is one of the best games Nintendo has ever released
